Legal rights and wrongs
While employers have traditionally been perceived as having the upper
hand, controlling the basis on which individual workers were employed,
the last few years have seen dramatic changes in the laws that govern the
relationship between employer and employee.
These changes, together with the recent increase in the compensatory award for unfair
dismissal from 12,000 pounds to 50,000 pounds, mean that as an employee your position
is stronger now than ever before. Some recent changes to the law include
provisions that:
- employees generally can now only be required to work for a maximum number of hours per week;
- employees are entitled to a minimum level of pay and period of holiday;
- employees are entitled to parental leave: mothers and fathers and anyone else with formal parental responsibility are now entitled to 13 weeks off work;
- employees can only be asked to work for a certain number of hours without a break.
