What inspired you to join Gateway Electronic Components?
What inspired me to join Gateway was the opportunity to start my career in a hands on environment where I could learn across all areas of marketing. The apprenticeship route really stood out to me as it offered both practical experience and the chance to gain recognised qualifications at the same time.
Gateway also had a clear focus on development and support, which made it an easy decision. From the beginning, it felt like a place where I wouldn’t just be doing a job, I’d be given the chance to grow, take on responsibility and build a long term career.
Can you describe your career journey since joining?
I started at Gateway as a Marketing Apprentice, where I completed my Level 3 in Principles of Online and Offline Marketing. From the beginning, Gateway supported me every step of the way, giving me the opportunity to gain several Google certifications and explore every area of marketing while introducing new initiatives.
In 2019, I was promoted to Marketing and Ecommerce Executive and went on to achieve my CIM Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing. With continued support from Gateway, I began taking the lead on key marketing activities and building my confidence in the role.
By 2021, I stepped into the role of Marketing Coordinator, where I took ownership of marketing budgets and led all marketing activity across the business. I also played a part in growing the team by helping to recruit a new Marketing Apprentice, who successfully completed their Level 3 with the same level of support I received.
In 2023, I progressed to my current role as Marketing Manager. I’m now focused on continuing to develop Gateway’s marketing strategy while working towards my CIM Level 6 qualification.
What do you enjoy most about working here?
Gateway CanDo, and the wider CanDo team, really reflects what Gateway is all about. The team is dynamic and everyone is always willing to help. The work is varied and no two days are the same, which keeps things interesting.
The directors are supportive and there is no such thing as a silly question. Your voice is heard and your ideas are genuinely considered.
Most importantly, it’s the people I work with every day that make coming to work so enjoyable.
What has been a memorable project or proudest moment so far?
My proudest moment so far was organising an overseas exhibition in Germany. From logistics and stand design to promotions, everything was delivered by the marketing team, which made it even more rewarding.
I was lucky enough to attend the show myself and see the impact of all that hard work first hand. It also gave me the chance to speak with both new and existing customers, which really helped me understand our audience and what they are looking for.
Since then, the show has become a regular part of our calendar and I’m proud to still be part of the team that attends each year.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining Gateway Electronic Components?
Gateway gives you real responsibility early on, so take every opportunity that comes your way. Say yes to projects, even the ones that feel a bit outside your comfort zone. That’s where you’ll learn the most and build your confidence quickly. A good example is getting involved in bigger activities like exhibitions or campaigns, they push you to think differently and see the bigger picture.
Make the most of the support around you. The team is approachable, the directors are open and there’s no such thing as a silly question. Ask, learn and take feedback on board, it genuinely helps you grow faster.
Also, bring your ideas. You won’t just be there to “do the job”, your input is valued and you’ll have the chance to shape what we do. If you spot a better way of doing something, say it.
And finally, enjoy it. The work is varied; the pace keeps things interesting and the people make a big difference. If you’re willing to get stuck in, you’ll get a lot out of it.
