About Your Role
In simple terms, what does your role involve?
My role focuses on leading the Field Services and Project Support function within the Communications Business Unit. I provide technical and project engineering support for customers using Persistent Systems’ MANET technology across the UK and Europe, as well as complementary capabilities such as CISTECH RoIP gateways and SENSOR OPS AI, simulation, and edge-autonomy tools. I work closely with defence, government, and commercial partners to ensure their systems are deployed effectively, operate reliably, and evolve with their mission needs. I also oversee the development of our internal support capability, ensuring the team has the tools, skills, and structure required to deliver exceptional service throughout the customer lifecycle.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Much of my day is dedicated to providing direction and oversight for the team—allocating tasks, reviewing project milestones in detail, and ensuring that our activities remain fully aligned with customer requirements and programme objectives. This involves maintaining close communication with team members, addressing emerging priorities, and ensuring that both technical and operational considerations are fully accounted for during planning and execution.
Key tasks include:
- Supporting live trials, demonstrations, and operational deployments, ensuring systems are configured, validated, and delivered to the standards required for mission-critical environments
- Providing technical input for bids and pre-sales engagements, contributing subject-matter expertise to ensure proposed solutions are robust, achievable, and aligned with customer needs
- Developing and refining processes that strengthen our service capability, focusing on improving efficiency, consistency, and technical resilience across the support function
- Coordinating with stakeholders across the UK, Europe, and the United States to maintain programme alignment, manage technical dependencies, and support collaborative delivery across regions
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy the variety—no two days are the same. One day I’m deep in technical problem-solving, the next I’m supporting a mission-critical field deployment or shaping long-term capability development. It’s rewarding knowing that the work we do directly enables customers to communicate more effectively in challenging environments. Seeing our technology deliver real impact is a big motivator for me.
What skills or qualities do you think are important for success in your role?
Technical curiosity: The technology moves fast, so staying current is essential.
Calm problem-solving: Issues often arise in high-pressure environments—remaining methodical is key.
Adaptability: Field work, customer demands, and project timelines can change quickly.
Clear communication: Explaining complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders is a regular part of the job.
Team leadership: Building capability, guiding others, and setting standards is core to my role.
Team & Culture
How would you describe working at Steatite in 3 words?
Supportive. Innovative. Solutions-focused.
What makes your team unique?
We work at the intersection of engineering, problem-solving, and real-world operational use. The team blends technical expertise with practical field experience, which gives us a deep understanding of what customers truly needs. We’re collaborative, adaptable, and not afraid to get hands-on with complex scenarios—whether that’s in the workshop, on a hillside, or in a secure facility.
What opportunities have you had to develop or grow since joining?
I’ve had the chance to grow significantly during my time at Steatite. I began as a Battery Assembler, learning the fundamentals of system build and manufacturing quality. I later moved into the Computers Division in the Technical Support team, where I gained hands-on experience diagnosing issues, supporting customers, and understanding how our technology is applied in the field.
From there, I transitioned into communications-focused roles, starting as a Communications Engineer within the Communications Division. This role gave me my first exposure to specialist communications systems, field deployments, and mission-critical customer engagement. It served as a natural bridge into more advanced technical and operational responsibilities.
Over time, I progressed into my current position leading the Field Services and Project Support teams. Each step has expanded my technical breadth, customer understanding, and leadership capability. The company has consistently encouraged me to develop, take on responsibility, and help shape the support function as it grows.
Personal Insight
What is something people might not know about your role?
Many people assume the role is purely technical, but a large part of it involves understanding customer operations, mission constraints, and how communications technology integrates into wider systems. It’s as much about people and problem-solving as it is about equipment and networks.
What advice would you give someone thinking about applying for a similar role?
Be ready to learn continuously and embrace variety. This role suits someone who enjoys both hands-on technical work and interacting directly with customers. If you like solving complex challenges, working in dynamic environments, and contributing to meaningful outcomes, it’s a great fit. Bring curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to get involved—and you’ll go far.
