What does a typical day look like for you?

Arrive & Review Previous Shift

• Check issues: downtime, scrap, quality concerns, staffing gaps
• Walk the floor quickly to observe equipment and housekeeping
• Ensuring the operators have the right jobs and equipment to start efficiently.

Team Briefing

• Quick huddle with operators
• Share priorities, safety reminders, and any issues from yesterday
• Confirm staffing and move people where needed

Oversee Production

• Monitor line performance (output, pace, scrap, bottlenecks)
• Solve real-time issues: missing materials, machine faults, staffing changes
• Train operators and ensure compliance with procedures
• Check quality at the line

This is the busiest part of the day.

Meetings / Reporting

• Participate in morning production meetings
• Raise issues needing engineering, maintenance, quality or planning support

Floor Support & Team Management

• Conduct safety walk or spot checks
• Handle any performance or attendance issues
• Support maintenance during minor breakdowns or setups

Lunch (usually interrupted!)

Continuous Monitoring & Problem-Solving

• Follow up on morning tasks
• Check material flow and WIP
• Ensure production stays on target
• Investigate recurring defects or downtime causes

Admin & Documentation

• Complete admin paperwork

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Obtaining a sense of pride watching the team hit targets, solve problems, and grow in confidence and skills. When the shifts run smoothly because of the planning and leadership, it’s genuinely rewarding.

What skills or qualities do you think are important for success in your role?

The need for strong leadership, clear communication, and good problem-solving skills. A supervisor must stay calm under pressure, make quick decisions, and understand the production process. Safety, quality awareness, organisation, and fairness are essential. Finally, a responsibility for the shift and look for continuous improvement opportunities.

What makes your team unique?

The support for one-another and a ‘family bond’ whilst staying positive, even under pressure and pulling together to help each other out. We have a mix of personalities and strengths which makes the team unique.

What opportunities have you had to develop or grow since joining?

Becoming a Certified IPC Trainer (CIT) means that I am officially qualified to train others to the IPC standards (CIS level). It’s the “train-the-trainer” pathway used across electronics manufacturing worldwide.

General Production Supervisor on-the-job training with continuous refresher training both internally and externally. i.e. First Aid Trained and Fire Safety Officer.

Personal Insight

What is something people might not know about your role?

A lot of the job happens behind the scenes: solving problems quietly, keeping morale up, and making sure everyone feels supported so the shift runs smoothly. Most people only see the output — not the effort it takes to hold everything together.

What advice would you give someone thinking about applying for a similar role?

Lead by example - The team will mirror your behaviour. If you stay calm, stay fair, and stay focused, they will too. If you jump in and help, they’ll respect you immediately.
