Early 2011

Clive Watson, David Bruce and John Roberts had a vision of creating a portfolio of high quality, independent, premium pubs across London, cathedral cities and market towns.

October 2011

The City Pub Company was officially founded in two halves: City Pub Company East (CPCE) and City Pub Company West (CPCW).

March 2012

City Pub Company West opened the doors to its first site; The Cork in central Bath.

May 2012

City Pub Company East opened the doors to its first site; The Mill in Cambridge.

December 2012

We closed the year with four fabulous sites open and trading, including two in Cambridge, one in Oxford and one in Bath.

April 2013

Alex Derrick and Rupert Clark were appointed as Chief Executives - Alex becoming responsible for City Pub Company West and Rupert for East.

December 2013

We completed our first full trading year, during which we spread our wings even further across the southern half of England and opened another 6 sites including; Alfie’s in Winchester, Bath Brew House in Bath, The Lighthouse in Battersea, The Phene in Chelsea, The Georgian Townhouse in Norwich and The Roundhouse in Wandsworth.


It was another great year, including another five site openings;

  • Daly’s Wine Bar in, London
  • Temple Brew House, London
  • The Lion and Lobster, Brighton
  • St Andrew’s Brew House, Norwich
  • The Nell Gwynne, London

February 2015

Tarquin Williams joined the senior team as Finance Director, bringing with him a wealth of relevant experience having spent 16-years at Fullers.

December 2015

Our third full year in and we’ve secured several new exciting additions, including our first two sites in Bristol; the King Street Brew House and Prince Street Social.

December 2016

With another year’s trade under our belts we had reached 21 sites including our 6th Brew House down in Southampton and our first beach-front location down in Hayling Island; Inn on the Beach.


Six more acquisitions brings us up to an impressive portfolio of 34 sites, including perhaps our most ambitious project to date; Aragon House in Parsons Green, London. Over the next 18months we will turn the impressive Grade II listed 5-storey building into a pub, restaurant, courtyard garden, cocktail bar, hotel and private function space.

1st November 2017

With a total of 35 pubs, City Pub Company East and City Pub Company West merged to create The City Pub Group plc (CPG).

23rd November 2017

The City Pub Group plc was admitted to AIM (the ‘mini’ stock exchange) and Alex Derrick and Rupert Clark became Managing Directors of the combined Group reporting to Executive Chairman, Clive Watson.


Following on from a successful float, 2018 brought with it a real opportunity for growth and resulted in a further 13 acquisitions being made over the 12 months. With the addition of a Vegan restaurant - Tell Your Friends - and another 10 hotel rooms our portfolio continued to grow and diversify.


We’ve made several large exciting purchases this year, including the Pride and Paddington and The Hoste, as well as opened our first site in Reading; the Market House. We also completed the acquisition of our 50th site!!

Current Day and The Future

We’re proud to operate what has become an extremely unique group of businesses where no two of our pubs are the same. We will continue to grow and push the boundaries of what a Pub Company can do.
