Our Strategic Aims

The V&A is the world's greatest museum of art and design. Our purpose is to inspire creativity through knowledge, using our unique collection to bring the past to life, explore the contemporary and inspire the designers of the future. To deliver this, we have four primary, long-term strategic objectives and people are at the heart of all of them.

  1. To provide optimum access to collections and services for diverse audiences, now and in the future.
We are committed to developing our audiences, both in size and diversity, gaining more users from under-represented and priority groups; improving physical, intellectual and sensory access to our collections; increasing the diversity of our people and developing a wider pool of museum sector recruits.

  2. To be acknowledged and respected as the world's leading museum of art and design
This is not only based on the quality and quantity of our collections, but the performance of our people, whatever they are doing in any of the functions that make the V&A work.

  3. To promote, support and develop creativity in individuals and in the economy
Creativity is our unique selling point. Promoting good design among producers and consumers is what the museum was set up to do. Everything we do is framed in the context of creativity and creative design, and this is expressed in various ways. We recognise that creativity in people underpins our business success through problem solving, perceiving things in new ways and translating fresh ideas into actions.

  4. To operate with the greatest possible financial and organisational efficiency
Looking after our staff is vital if we want to operate efficiently and effectively. We have a number of initiatives in place to get the best out of people and help them to do their job to their best ability. These include significantly investing in IT over the coming years, developing a more strategic HR service, promoting health and well being in the workplace and CulturePlan, a wide-reaching programme which identifies barriers to effective and rewarding working, and stimulates new ways of thinking and working. CulturePlan helps us to manifest our brand values through our work and promote better internal communication.
